How to fix a Google Nexus 7 (2nd Generation) Step-by-Step Guide:

  • To begin your repair you will need to fully power off your Google Nexus 7. Once it is powered off you can begin removing the back cover from the screen assembly and motherboard. Since the two are bound very tightly on this model, it may be helpful to start with an X-Acto knife or a hobby knife to unpry the first clips. Starting on the side of the device is generally easiest. You can then use your safe open pry tool to wedge between the seams all around the edges of the phone until the back cover separates from the rest of the device. Avoid prying near the USB port on the bottom.

  • Once the back cover is removed from the device, use the pry tool to release the battery connector located at the top right of the device. This will ensure that the device is completely unpowered. You can then remove the four (4) Small Phillips screws highlighted in red in the diagram below with the Small Phillips Screwdriver. Next, use the pry tool to release the remaining flex cable connections, which are highlighted in green below. Be careful to release and remove these connections without ripping any of the flex cables. Once these conections are released, you can safely remove the battery and battery housing.

  • You will now be able to release the five (5) connections higlighted in green below with the pry tool, as well as remove the seventeen (17) screws from the two motherboard components (top and bottom) using the Small Phillips screwdriver. The screws are different sizes so make sure to keep track of them so you will know where to put them back.

  • Once the screws are taken out, use the pry tool to remove the lower motherboard piece (Figure 3.1 ) and the black loud speaker beneath it (Figure 3.2).
  • There is one more connector beneath the loud speaker that will need to be released with the pry tool. There is adhesive tape covering this piece, so gently remove the tape, as shown in Figure 3.3, and pull the long orange flex cable out.
  • Next, use the pry tool to gently remove the top motherboard piece. Be sure that all connections are released from this part so that no flex cables release when you lit the motherboard out. Once the top motherboard piece is removed, you can take out the top speaker beneath it, as shown in Figure 3.5.
  • The final component to remove from the housing is the button flex cable located on the left side. Gently press against this cable with the pry tool to safely remove the cable from the adhesive that binds it to the housing (Figure 3.6). Once this is removed you will be able to start removing the glass touch screen from the housing.

  • To prepare for removing the screen, use a heat gun (on low heat settings) or a hair dryer (on medium heat settings) to heat all around the edges of the device for 45 seconds to 1 minute, so as not to overheat the device. This will loosen the adhesive that secures the screen.
  • After heating the edges, use the safe open pry tool to wedge between the screen assembly and housing, moving the tool all the way around the device like you did when removing the back cover.
  • Simply replace the damaged parts with the new ones and reverse the order to put your phone back together again.
