iPod Nano 4th Generation Take Apart Repair Guide

This guide shows how to take apart and disassemble the iPod Nano 4th Generation mp3 player quickly and safely. This take apart repair guide is designed by the Repairs Universe team to help you to install replacement parts and repair your damaged iPod Nano.

This guide will help you to install the following iPod Nano 4th Generation parts:

Tools Required:

iPod Nano 4th Generation Take apart guide:

  • To disassemble the iPod Nano 4th Generation, first of all you need to remove the top and the bottom bezels. This can be done using a Safe Open Pry Tool. Use the Safe Open Pry Tool to pop the plastic bezel off from the top of iPod. The top of the iPod has a ?Hold? switch which will also come out when the top bezel is removed. Then use the tool again to pop off the bezel on the bottom of the iPod.

  • Once you have the top bezel removed, you will find two small Phillips screws at the locations shown in the above figure. Use the small Phillips screwdriver to remove these screws.

  • The removal of bottom bezel will reveal three small Phillips screws at the positions indicated in the above figure. You will have to use the small Phillips screwdriver to remove these screws as well.
  • After you have the screws removed from the bottom you will need to remove the metal frame (metal piece) that surrounds the dock connector. Just pry it out and it will come out easily.
  • Now you need to loosen up the cage on the top of iPod after you have removed the top screws. Use a flat tool to lift up on the cage. Do this gently in order to avoid any damage to the ?Hold? switch. Now try to slide it out slowly, but when it starts to slide out, you will need to stop when you see the internal part of ?Hold? switch. Gently lift up the ?Hold? switch using the flat tool.
  • Once the ?Hold? switch and its cable is free, gently slide out the LCD until some portion of it is slid out of the casing and a connector (a connection with a cable) at the bottom-left side of glass window is exposed. You need to stop there and remove the glass screen before you could disconnect this ribbon cable.
  • Now to remove the glass screen from the iPod frame, you need to apply some pressure using your thumbs at the bottom of the glass screen and at the same time use the pry tool to lift up the glass from the top. You need to be very gentle and careful in prying up the glass screen to avoid the scratching of the glass screen or damaging the LCD.

  • After the removal of the glass screen you can now lift up on the locking mechanism that is holding the ribbon cable down (this is the same cable that was exposed when you slid out the LCD and its location is shown in the above figure). This ribbon cable will be adhered to the LCD assembly and therefore after the cable is separated you will also have to pry it up before you can slide out the LCD.
  • Now you will require the pry tool in order to remove the logic board and the battery from the casing. It is to be noted here that the battery is adhered to the iPod casing and you will have to pry it up before you can slide it out.

  • After the battery is loosened you can gently slide the logic board and the battery down until a cable connector is exposed at the bottom at the location indicated in the above figure. You will have to stop here and remove this cable in order to avoid the snapping of the cable. Just lift up the locking mechanism and remove the cable from its connection. After making sure that the cables are not adhered to the dock connector, go ahead with pushing the battery and the logic board out of the bottom of the unit. But be very gentle and careful because the small cables hanging behind can be snapped. The iPod Nano battery is attached to the logic board.
  • Once the battery and the logic board unit is removed, take the safe open pry tool or a flat tool to pry down the click-wheel module from the inside of the case. Adding a little bit of push from the top of the click-wheel will make it easy to collapse it into the inside casing. The click-wheel can now be slid out.

Your iPod Nano 4th Generation is now disassembled. Reverse the instructions above to reassemble your iPod.
