How to tell which series of PSP you own - Original 1000, Slim 2000 or 3000

This guide is designed by the RepairsUniverse.com team to enable you to easily identify your PSP model, just by looking at some of the features. This guide highlights the differences between the PSP 1000 (original), PSP 2000 (Slim & Lite) and PSP 3000. These differences are explained below:

Battery Compartment of PSP 1000

1- Probably the quickest and easiest way to determine the series of PSP you have is by checking the model code. You can find the model code of your PSP printed on a label in its battery compartment. You will have to remove the battery cover and the battery in order to find out the model. In the above picture the label reads PSP-1000. The PSP shown in the picture and labels which read PSP-100X (where X represents a number) are the original PSP 1000 series. Similarly PSP-200X are the PSP 2000 series and the PSP-300X are the PSP 3000 series.

2 - PSP 1000 and PSP 2000 have bowl-shaped buttons on the lower side of the faceplate (Home, Select & Start) whereas the same buttons for PSP 3000 have quite different shape (much rounded ones).

3 - PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 are much thinner than PSP 1000 (about 19 % slimmer). PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 are also lighter than PSP 1000 (more than 30% lighter).

4- The speakers of PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 are placed at the faceplate whereas the speakers of PSP 1000 are located at the bottom side (as shown in the above pictures). This improvement is made for PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 to avoid the sound being muffled when the PSP is rested on its bottom.

5- The battery of PSP 1000 has capacity of 1800mAh whereas the battery for PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 has capacity of 1200mAh. But this does not mean that PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 offers lesser play-time because the newer versions of PSP consumes much less power than the PSP 1000. An almost double than normal play-time can be achieved for PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 by replacing their original battery with the more powerful battery of PSP 1000. Since the battery of PSP 1000 is thicker, you will have to buy a new battery cover, which is available in the market, for your PSP 2000 / PSP 3000.

6- The UMD design on PSP 3000 has much thin outline of the circle and sleeker than that of the design for its predecessors (PSP 1000 and PSP 2000).

7- PSP 1000 has an 'open latch' on the top side of the system (as highlighted in the above picture) to open the disc cover, whereas PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 do not have any 'open latches' for the opening of their disc covers.

8- UMD disc trays of PSP 2000 and PSP 3000 open much wider than that of PSP 1000. Also PSP 1000 has a metallic slot to support the inserted disc which the later versions do not have which makes them more fragile and vulnerable.
