Order numbers are about the absoulte best way of identifying a MacBook. They are specific enough, safe to use, and fairly simple to find. The Order number can be found on invoices, recipts, product information sheets, packaging, shipping information, brochures, and many other MacBook doccuments. The disadvantage to the order number is that it can not be found on the hardware itself nor under the "About This Mac" section. However, having a safe, specific number to identify your MacBook is a necessary tool when attempting a repair on your MacBook.

Model numbers are genrally a semi unique number that relates to the family of the device. The convience of a model number is that it can be found on the hardware, bottom cover, or under the battery on most MacBooks. Although it is not the best identifier, it is a very simple way of narrowing down the type of MacBook you may be using. On the example below, the model number is A1466, which tells us that it is a MacBook Air, 13.3" screen, with Apple order number of MD231LL/A. Some models may be just as simple as this example, when others will have many possible order numbers.
